Some would consider it sacrilege, but I love messing around with old hymns and carols. At Christmas I enjoy breaking out of the celebration of the incarnation to remind myself of the bigger picture.
I wrote this extra verse for Hark! the Herald Angels Sing last year but didn’t get a chance to use it, so I thought I’d post it here just in case anyone else could benefit from it.
Though he came to give us life
Not in vain he gave his own
Precious blood that paid the price
Reckless love to loveless shown
Ne’er this sacrifice repeated
Even death his death defeated
Bursting forth he rose again
Breaking off the chains from men
Join as all the heavens sing
Glory to the risen King!
In case you missed it, I borrowed the “love to loveless shown” idea from My Song is Love Unknown.
